Infrastructure Projects

Home ยป Infrastructure Projects

The completion of a transportation infrastructure project can mean easier access, enhanced transportation options, enhanced safety, and more opportunity for businesses. The lengthy project planning and interruptive construction period, however, often makes that vision difficult to see.

Residents, commuters, and businesses experience challenges during the planning and construction of transportation infrastructure projects near their locations. Being informed and having a voice is vital to navigate the building process so that the ribbon-cutting ceremony is a joyous celebration.

Learn about and share your voice on planned transportation infrastructure projects in Minneapolis through websites, community surveys, and public meetings. Where are the road, bikeway, and transit closures and detours? What programs are in place to help businesses in the construction zone? How can we support them?

Planned & Current Infrastructure Projects

METRO B Line Lake St/Marshall/Selby Transit Upgrade (Opening June 14, 2025)

Major construction on the METRO B Line arterial bus rapid transit (BRT) was completed in 2024 on 7.5 miles of bus-only lanes, with all future B Line stations currently in use by Route 21 . The B Line runs east-west from Uptown Minneapolis to downtown St Paul. This spring crews will finish final line testing in time for the June 14 opening.

METRO E Line & Hennepin Avenue Rebuild (Opening late 2025)

The City is in the final stages of reconstructing Hennepin Ave S. The new, multimodal design improves space for people to: walk, ride transit, bike, and drive. Hennepin Avenue in Uptown is where the METRO E Line arterial bus rapid transit (BRT) will open in late 2025. The E Line will substantially replace Route 6. The 13.3-mile E Line connects Southdale, Linden Hills, Uptown, Downtown, Marcey-Holmes, and the University of Minneasota.

9th St S & 10th St S Corridor Improvement (Concept design 2025, construction 2027)

The City will enhance the safety and comfort of all users on 9th and 10th St S in downtown with upgraded bike lanes, safety improvements at cross streets, and traffic signal improvements.

Park & Portland Ave Rebuild (Concept design 2025, construction starting 2027)

Hennepin County is planning improvements to Park Avenue and Portland Avenue between I-94 and 46th Street. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027. The project will enhance separation between people biking and vehicle traffic, reduce vehicle speeds, shorten crossing distances at intersections, upgrade pedestrian ramps to current standards, and replace outdated traffic signals.

University Ave NE Rebuild (Design finalization 2025, construction 2027)

Minnesota Department of Transportation is working with the City, Hennepin County, and the public to create a new design for University Ave N.E. in Northeast Minneapolis. The reconstruction will improve safety for walking, rolling, biking, riding transit, and driving.

METRO F Line & Central Ave Northeast Rebuild (Concept design 2026, construction 2028)

Minnesota Department of Transportation is collaborating with local agencies and the public to create a new design for Central Ave N.E. in Northeast Minneapolis. The reconstruction will incorporate Metro Transit‘s proposed F Line bus rapid transit route. The project’s goal is to improve safety for walking, rolling, biking, riding transit, and driving.
