The Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) region celebrated Car-Free MSP (inspired by World Car Free Day) on Tuesday, September 22, when cars stayed in the garage and for one glorious day, and the workforce commuted on bikes or by foot, scooter, transit, or telework.
The pandemic shifted reality as people experienced a rapid change from office work to telework. Fully 66% of US employees are no longer commuting. We’ve heard quieter streets, breathed cleaner air, and enjoyed a healthy surge of bicyclists and pedestrians. We’ve saved money at the pump and at the parking ramp. Our hour-long bumper-to-bumper commutes disappeared. Still, many of us are still commuting or driving for errands or appointments when more sustainable options are available.
