Let’s show what’s possible and live/work entirely car-free for 24 hours on Tuesday, September 22.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) region celebrates Car-Free MSP (inspired by World Car Free Day) on Tuesday, September 22, when our cars stay in the garage and for one glorious day, and the workforce commutes on bikes or by foot, scooter, transit, or telework.
The pandemic shifted reality as people experienced a rapid change from office work to telework. Fully 66% of US employees are no longer commuting. We’ve heard quieter streets, breathed cleaner air, and enjoyed a healthy surge of bicyclists and pedestrians. We’ve saved money at the pump and at the parking ramp. Our hour-long bumper-to-bumper commutes disappeared. Still, many of us are still commuting or driving for errands or appointments when more sustainable options are available.
It’s easy to for your staff to participate!
Minneapolis employers vie for the title “Best Car-Free Workplace” based on their employees’ participation on Tuesday, September 22. Sign up your company and promote Car-Free MSP with your employees prior to the event. Then, send out a link to a brief survey on September 22.
Challenge your employees to go A WHOLE DAY without driving a car!
This is a fun opportunity to build camaraderie and deliver on your organization’s sustainability values. Employees who take part have a chance to win an e-bike valued at $3,000! This year we’ve tailored the competition for remote workers. We’ll recognize the best performing employers on our website, social media, and newsletter.
Build excitement at your company. From September 8 – 22 use your company’s communications platforms to set the stage for fun and encourage participation. Post “celebrity” employee commuter/teleworker photos. Move Minneapolis will promote your company in social media – make sure to tag us at @movempls using the hashtag #CarFreeMSP!
The bottom line. We’ll track driving miles saved due to remote working, biking, walking and same-household carpooling. Your participation in Car-Free MSP will result in important, tangible outcomes for our region.
When your employees respond to a brief survey sent on Tuesday, September 22, they are entered in a drawing to win a shiny new City Commuter e-bike from Pedego Twin Cities.
