Metro Transit’s Northstar Commuter Rail (Route 888) runs 40 miles between Big Lake—northwest of the Twin Cities metro area—and downtown Minneapolis, with stops in Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids, and Fridley.

The train service runs parallel to Hwy. 10 and I-94 and terminates in downtown Minneapolis. The travel time of the entire route is 52 minutes. This makes Northstar a fast, reliable and affordable alternative to driving. Fares can be paid with Metropass and Go To Cards.

Regular weekday commuter service features five inbound trains and one outbound train; the late-afternoon and early-evening commute features five outbound trains and one inbound train. Additional trips are added for Twins and Vikings games and other major events.

Each train typically has four passenger cars that roll smoothly at speeds up to 79 mph. Each double-decker passenger car seats 145 per train car with room for bicycles and baggage. The NorthStar offers amenities:

  • Comfortable seating
